Long Lasting Bulls

Spring Mountain Stock Farm’s cattle industry started with our first purchase of purebred polled Herefords from Joanne’s dad, Leo Miko, of Double Gear Ranch in Evansburg, Alberta, in April 1986. He was retiring from the cattle business and sold some of his cattle to his son. Roy, who still operates a grain and polled Hereford farm under Double Gear Ranch today. We purchased 15 cows with calves at side that started our Hereford industry. In the early 1990s, we purchased cattle from various herds across the Western Provinces and built up our herd to over 100 head purebred and a commercial herd of approximately the same. We also AI’d some females as well to top quality champion sires.

Through the years we have now kept a consistent cow herd of approximately 60 and retained all good heifers with good maternal traits each year. We strive for easy fleshing cattle, good feet, low birth weights and stress-free calving, not only for ourselves but our customers as well. Based on the number of repeat customers over the years, our breeding program and strict culling is working to provide long lasting bulls and high quality calves in the fall.

We run a family operation with our son Bryce and his wife Sharah and their children, Broden and Liam, as well as our daughter Charice, her husband, Alex, and their children, Averie, Ethan, Raeden and Brettan.

We have sold our bulls and females at various local sales but over the last few years, we mainly sell by private treaty off the farm. Our clientele ranges from locally around Beaverlodge and the Grande Prairie area as well as the Northern BC Peace, Northwestern Alberta and Northeastern Alberta too.
